Expert Lecture on New Age Building Materials and Modern Construction Practices
The Department of Engineering at Bahra University hosted an expert lecture in collaboration with UltraTech Cement on new age building materials, advanced admixtures, sustainable construction, and career opportunities in the cement industry.
The Department of Engineering at Bahra University organized a highly engaging expert lecture in collaboration with UltraTech Cement, one of India’s leading cement and building materials companies. The session was centered on New Age Building Materials and Modern Construction Practices, designed to provide students with industry-relevant technical knowledge and professional guidance beyond conventional academic learning.
The lecture was delivered by two distinguished industry professionals — Er. Akshay Sharma and Er. Kanchan Chauhan — both of whom brought years of field experience and practical expertise. Their combined insights gave students an invaluable window into the rapidly evolving world of construction technology and sustainable infrastructure development.
A significant portion of the lecture explored advanced construction materials that are redefining modern infrastructure. The experts introduced students to UltraTech’s range of innovative cement products and placed particular emphasis on advanced admixtures — chemical and mineral additives central to high-performance concrete design — including superplasticizers, accelerating and retarding admixtures, silica fume, fly ash, and waterproofing compounds. The speakers underscored that understanding these materials is a core competency demanded by today’s construction industry, and that sustainable practices such as low-carbon binders and recycled aggregates are increasingly becoming regulatory requirements.
Mobile Van Assistance: Real-Time Concrete Testing Demonstrated
One of the most practically valuable segments was a detailed demonstration of UltraTech Cement’s Mobile Van Assistance (MVA) facility — an initiative that brings state-of-the-art concrete testing directly to construction sites. Students gained first-hand exposure to on-site testing techniques including the slump cone test, compressive strength testing, water-cement ratio analysis, pH checks, and non-destructive testing (NDT) methods. The demonstration highlighted how mobile van-based concrete testing addresses real-time quality control challenges, offering students a realistic understanding of quality assurance in the construction industry.
Career Opportunities in the Cement and Construction Industry:
The experts guided students through the wide spectrum of career opportunities available in the cement and construction sector, including roles in technical services, site quality control, research and development, project management, and sustainability consulting. They also addressed industry expectations from fresh engineering graduates, stressing the importance of practical skills, hands-on laboratory experience, and familiarity with Indian Standard codes. Students were encouraged to pursue internships, site visits, and industry certifications.
Women Empowerment in Engineering
In an inspiring segment, the lecture featured a dedicated discussion on women empowerment in the construction and engineering sector. Er. Kanchan Chauhan shared her professional journey as a testament to the industry’s changing landscape. The session highlighted the growing number of women professionals in civil engineering, encouraging students to recognize construction as a field with immense opportunities for skilled and motivated women engineers.
Bridging Academic Learning and Industry Practice:
The overarching theme of the session was the need to bridge the gap between academic engineering education and real-world construction practice. The Department of Engineering’s collaboration with UltraTech Cement reflects Bahra University’s broader commitment to meaningful industry-academia partnerships. Overall, the lecture was an enriching experience — combining technical depth with professional guidance and reinforcing the Department’s dedication to producing well-rounded, industry-ready engineers.
